Background
- Opened in 1958 by WWII refugees Avram and Masha Zeleznikov, after they took over what was O'Sheas milk bar.
- Named after both the storyteller from 1001 Arabian Nights who told stories to keep herself alive, and a cafe in Paris that Avram and Masha traveled to after escaping Poland in 1949.
- One of the few original Acland St eateries still in operation. Another is Monarch Cake Shop.
- The cafe and the Zeleznikovs were central characters in the 2001 book Cafe Scheherazade by Melbourne literary author Arnold Zable.
- In 1999, the Zeleznikovs retired and the cafe has new owners.
Menu
The chicken schnitzel is well renowned.
